Lake Apo: A Timeless Place

Looking for a good side trip after a grueling climb? Then you might want to consider Lake Apo as part of your itinerary. Dubbed as cleanest inland body of water in the early 1990’s in Northern Mindanao, Lake Apo is among the favorite place to be after an exhausting trek or simply a quick escape from the stressful city life.

Lake Apo, a crater lake measuring up to 24 hectares with a maximum depth of 26 meters can be found in the inner mountainous area of Sitio Lawa, Brgy. Guinoyoran with an elevation of 640 meters. It is about 11km away from Poblacion, City Proper of Valencia, Bukidnon.

The lake got its name from a bisaya word “Apo” which means elder or grandparent. According to legend, there was a man living in the mountains who assaulted his granddaughter and was punished by the mountain deities for his disrespectful act by flooding the area forming the Lake Apo. However, Geologists states that the circular-shaped rift lake was formed due to the movement of the earth’s crust. This is due to the presence of active volcanic craters nearby Mt. Calayo also known as Musuan Peak.

The Lake resort is operated and maintained by the Alfonso Family.  Developing accommodation, facilities and other amenities that makes your stay more enjoyable and hassle-free. According to Dr. Alfonso, the lake is still on its way for more developments. The plan includes building more facilities such as a classroom-size conference hall, coffee shop and more cottages for rent that conforms the international housekeeping standards. More fun water activities will also be added such additional jet skis, pedal boats, kayaks, canoes, banana boat and water trampoline as the current water sport facilities are still limited and only for private use.
